Sound Streaming
From v0.3 on it is possible to stream all sounds played on your PC to the PSP alongside the desktop image. There are some pitfalls while setting up your system for this, the following section tries to explain all steps involved.
You may read the text version of the tutorial below or watch a video of the setup process.
If you are using these operating system, you need an audio device capable of recording the audio mix that is played over the speakers. This means pure playback devices like Bluetooth audio dongles will not work with PSPdisp as they provide no recording interface at all. Also many drivers do not contain the required recording sources, this applies mostly to built-in Windows drivers and OEM versions (e.g. from the manufacturer of a notebook). Drivers for the audio chipsets themselves (e.g. Realtek) usually expose every feature the hardware contains, so if you know the manufacturer of your audio hardware you should look on their website for a driver (often used onboard soundchips are Realtek AC97 and Realtek HD-Audio).
To prepare your system, do the following steps:
  • Start the PSPdisp tray application on your PC
  • rightclick on the tray icon and click on "Sound" > "Choose input device..."
  • you see a list of your audio recording devices on the dropdown menu at the top, choose your main sound card
  • click on "Open recording mixer / recording settings", the recording mixer opens
  • open the "Options" menu and choose "Properties"
  • you see a list of available audio sources, set a checkmark on any of the following "Stereo Mix", "Mono Mix", "What you hear" (or similar, you can savely mark them all)
  • if you cannot see any of the mentioned recording sources, you need a different driver as detailed in the introduction paragraph
  • close the windows with "OK"
  • back in the recording mixer, select the newly enabled device for recording through the checkbox at the bottom
  • close the recording mixer, setup has finished
If you cannot enable the "Stereomix" device because your driver doesn't offer one, you can look for a driver update. It's basically the same situation as described for Windows 2000/XP. Alternatively just choose the "Software Loopback Device".
I advise you to read the introductory section about Windows 2000 and XP first, as the situation here is an extension of it.
A new feature in Vista is that you can record sound from playback devices. This means you don't need a recording device anymore, meaning that USB headphones or bluetooth audio dongles can be used with PSPdisp. To do that, you only have to select "Software Loopback Device" as the recording device. A drawback is that you cannot stream DRM protected content through that, so copyprotected music will not play through PSPdisp. This might as well be true for sound from a bluray movie. Other than that there is still the option of using the hardware loopback device ("Stereomix" or similar), like there was in previous Windows versions.
The following describes setup with the hardware recording device:
  • Start the PSPdisp tray application on your PC
  • rightclick on the tray icon and click on "Sound" > "Choose input device..."
  • you see a list of your audio recording devices on the dropdown menu at the top, the new recording input will later appear here
  • click on "Open recording mixer / recording settings", the recording settings control panel opens
  • by default, deactivated inputs are hidden. Rightclick into the input list and enable the display of deactivated devices
  • new inputs should appear in the list
  • rightclick the device called "Stereo Mix", "Mono Mix" or "What you hear" and enable it
  • close the window
  • back in PSPdisp, click on "Refresh" next to the input list
  • select the newly added device, setup is done
SideShow Mode
Using the PSP as a SideShow device is only possible in Windows Vista or Windows 7. There are also certain limitations due to the way it is implemented in PSPdisp.
Start PSPdisp and rightclick the tray icon. Check the option "Use SideShow device" in the "Display device" menu.
The button assignment cannot be changed at the moment.
Press the "Menu" button (Start) on the SideShow gadgets welcome screen to bring up a context menu. You can change the theme from "Graphite" to "Silver" here. Please note that the "Configure" menu entry does nothing at the moment.
SideShow images are transmitted with there own JPEG quality level. It can be changed alongside the other quality presets in the PSPdisp quality settings tab. Because only screen changes are transmitted and SideShow content is mostly static or seldom updated the standard value is 95 (which is almost lossless).
  • The SideShow driver is always active, keep that in mind when using resource intensive SideShow gadgets and disable them when they are not needed
  • Downloading content to the SideShow device (the PSP) is not supported
  • Any "offline" functions (PC turned off) are not supported
  • Audio streaming is not available while using SideShow mode
PSP Options
You can configure the PSPdisp game regarding power saving and automatically choosing a communication mode on startup. To do this edit the file "pspdisp.cfg" in the PSPdisp game folder on your PSP (usually "x:\PSP\GAME\PSPdisp", where "x" is the driver letter for your PSP).

Common Tasks
Control Files
The PSP buttons can be used to generate keyboard and mouse events. Which buttons corresponds to what key event is defined in ".control" files. The control files have to be put into the PSPdisp appdata folder, which can be opened by pressing the corresponding button in the control options. These files are structured like ini-files with a section for each button and every direction on the DPad and the analog stick. At the moment the analog motions are translated in digital button presses. Therefore it can be mapped just like the DPad.

When an error occurs the button will not be mapped, but the rest of the file will. No error message is given.
Troubleshooting
F.A.Q.

Compiling the source
The whole project needs three different compilers / IDEs, fortunately all of them are available for free on the net. Note that the setup process for them will take a while and is rather involved.
The display driver needs the Microsoft WDK (Windows Driver Kit) .
Building the Windows application requires Borland Turbo Delphi Explorer (not the .NET version).
Some installer tools require Visual C++ 2008. For the 32 bit binaries, VS Express suffices. To build the 64 bit binaries you need VS Professional or the command line compilers from the Windows Platform SDK.
The PSPSDK (PSP toolchain) is needed for compiling the Playstation Portable application. I use the PSPSDK for Windows .
Building the installer requires the Nullsoft Install System (NSIS).
